Social experiences can be expensive for your nervous system.

Your brain is always tracking signals about belonging, evaluation, and whether you might have caused harm or lost standing with someone. That’s part of why a sharp comment or tense exchange can feel so disproportionately activating. Social rejection and exclusion can even recruit some of the same broad brain systems involved in distress and physical pain.

You end up trying to work out what happened, what it meant, what they might be thinking, and whether you need to do something next - over and over and over again.
